Novels to help you improve your English

Reading novels in English will help you improve your English in so many ways. Firstly, you will increase your vocabulary more than you can possibly imagine. One of my tips is to underline and take a note of words that are new to you. At the end of each chapter, you should write them down in a notebook and look up their meanings. If you count how many new words you have learnt in just one chapter, you´ll be amazed !

Books for children and young people

“Mr Men” books by Roger Hargreaves: These beautifully illustrated books are great fun and characters like Mr Happy, Mr Bump and Little Miss Chatterbox will appeal to young children(and, if we´re honest, to much older people too!).

The Harry Potter books by J.K Rowling: If you´ve read these in Spanish, why not try the original versions in English?

Any of the series of books by Jacqueline Wilson : These books are hugely popular with teenagers. They sometimes deal with difficult and controversial issues but always in a way that young people can relate to.

Books for upper-intermediate learners of English

“The House on Mango Street” by Sandra Cisneros: This is the story of a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago. The author uses quite simple language and short sentences which makes it ideal for learners of English.

“Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck: This is a classic of American literature and tells the story of two migrant workers in California in the 1930s.

Books for advanced learners

Contemporay fiction by writers like Zadie Smith, Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie and Khaled Hosseini: these authors write about the lives of people in the U.K, Nigeria and Afghanistan and are great storytellers.

Happy reading and do let us know if you have your own suggestions to help other learners!
